How did your classes differ from those you have taken at CSULB?
Program Testimonials
•   I took Chinese watercolor and calligraphy in Tunghai university. Both classes required lots of time practicing. They are both art classes, but understanding the instructor’s words does help.
•    I also took my GE courses, such as Chinese Modern History and Logic. Most of the classes would require advanced Chinese ability. However, there are some limited English speaking courses in the school that some of you might be interested in.
•   (Sp. 2012) I only took Chinese. The classes are much more intense than CSULB Chinese classes. Teachers only speak Chinese in class. It’s harder to do well on their exams, because there may be many characters on the exam you don’t know. However, you learn so much more in the end because of the rigor.

What was your housing like and how much did it cost you per month? How easy was it to arrange?
Program Testimonials
•   I stayed at the dorm the school provided for me. Room size is good and you would share it with three more people. There are grocery stores you can find near by, and you can pretty much find everything you need. Summer can be extremely hot if your room is at the top level
•   (Sp. 2012) The first semester I lived in the dorms. My roommates were all Taiwanese and were very nice. But I like my own space, so I moved to an apartment for the second semester. It was in a nice village with little restaurants and food stands. $8,500 (NT) for the whole semester
•   The dorm is the easiest way for international students to live. There are apartments available for students nearby though, and the prices may be as high as $5,000 (NT)/month.
•   (Sp. 2012) Other apartments were about 7000-8000 NTD
•   (Sp. 2012) 5000 NTD ˜ $125 USD

What were your experiences with the language? Did you feel you had enough language preparation?
Program Testimonials
•   There were cases where American students took too many Chinese courses during their stay in Taiwan and became stressful about their stay. Advice – only take courses that you can handle. Although it would be a great opportunity to improve your Chinese, Chinese is very difficult language to learn.
•   (Sp. 2012) I improved quite a bit. I am happy I started prepping a year before I went. It felt like just enough to get by.
