Valparaíso and Viña del Mar


4-week Service-Learning and Internships
ISA-ELAP offers structured service-learning and internship placements year-round, in a variety of fields, yielding valuable personal and professional experience.

Placements available in Valparaíso and Viña del Mar include an after school program, a center for malnourished infants, a children's rehabilitation center, an English language institute, a hippotherapy center for children, a medical clinic, a microenterprise NGO, a nursery school, a public school, a technical school and a special education center.

City Description

A city of seafaring traditions and grand hilltop views, Valparaíso is known as “the Jewel of the Pacific.” Valparaíso also functions as the primary commercial harbor, naval base and a seat of political power for the country, which creates a unique and modern dynamic in a city with roots in the colonial past. This city offers something for everyone, including spectacular beaches, world-class museums, exotic cuisine and fine architecture.

Minimum Grade Point Average Requirement
  • Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.50.
Minimum Admissions Prerequisites
  • Spanish language prerequisites vary by placement. Please visit the ISA-ELAP website for more information.
  • Placement eligibility is determined by a Spanish language interview, resume in Spanish and cover letter upon application.

Academic Information
Academic Disclaimer
  • ISA-ELAP programs are non-credit bearing. In order for participants to earn internship, service-learning, field study or independent study credit from their home institution, proper arrangements must be made between the student and his/her home university before the program begins. Contact ELAP for information on how past participants have been able to obtain academic credit for their ELAP program.
  • It is possible to combine an ELAP Valparaíso placement with an ISA academic term abroad. For more information, please visit the ISA website.
